Research Interests
My main research interests are in modelling dynamic systems, in non-linear dynamics and vibration and in the application of these areas along with design to solve industrial problems. These have been applied to a wide variety of systems, including non-linear rotor systems, impacting systems, geotechnical systems and aspects of a non-linear rotordynamics/wear problem. I also have an interest in applying dynamics and design to biomedical problems.

Research Grants
- To be announced Co-Investigator with Dr Marco Cardinale (of Biomedical Sciences and BOA) on £152k NEStech grant for the Development of an apparatus and method for neuromuscular stimulation.
- 1/02/2006- 31/03/2009 Co-Investigator with Dr A. Ivanović (principal investigator) on a €220k (approx. £145k) EC grant “Development of Fishing Gears with Reduced Effects on the Environment” (part of the €3M DEGREE project with 12 other participants). The work is collaborative with Drs Barry O’Neil of the Marine Lab, Fisheries Research Station, Aberdeen and Leonie Robinson of the University of Liverpool who have also received EC funding.
- 1/10/2004-30/9/2006 Co-Investigator with Dr P Bagley on a £192k Proof of Concept grant to develop a Variable Buoyancy Device.
- 1/11/2003-31/5/2006 Principal-Investigator with Drs W. F. Deans and P. F. A. MacConnell for a £204k KTP Programme with Pipeline Technique Ltd.
- 1/11/2003-31/5/2006 Joint grant holder with Prof A.A. Rodger (Principal Investigator), Prof M. C. Davies (University of Dundee), Drs A Ivanović and A. J. Starkey of a £267k E.P.S.R.C. grant (GR/S21335/01). This is a 3-year investigation into the behaviour of soil nails placed in retaining walls using the centrifuge modelling technique and numerical modelling.
- 1/02/2003-31/2/2006 Joint grant holder with Prof A.A. Rodger and Dr A Ivanović of a £36k grant funded by Amec. This isa 3-year project investigation on the determination of the total bolt length using the current GRANIT system with a view to redesigning it as well as developing a mathematical model in order to be able to detect some faults in anchorages, which currently cannot be detected.
