The Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust (The LRET) Centre for Safety and Reliability Engineering builds on existing expertise and track record within the School of Engineering to form a world-class unit for research and teaching in safety and reliability engineering. Echoing the mission statement of the original Safety Engineering Unit established by Professor Baker at the University in 1991, the aim of The LRET Centre is “to establish and maintain a centre of excellence in the study of practical and theoretical problems related to the safety and reliability of engineering systems, with due emphasis on the effects of human factors”.
The specific objectives of the Centre are:
- to conduct world-class research in the general area of safety and reliability engineering at the University of Aberdeen;
- to develop the industry focus of safety and reliability engineering research and facilitate the transfer of knowledge and technology in the area between different engineering disciplines and between different sectors of industry;
- to explore the best ways of teaching safety and reliability concepts and methods to people with different engineering backgrounds;
- to develop and deliver a world-class MSc programme in Safety and Reliability Engineering aimed at educating the leading safety engineering specialists of the future;
- to engage with the worldwide LRET academy and collaborate with LRET centres with related research interests; to work with LRET in promoting the values of the Trust and in promoting education and research in science and engineering.
