The Engineering Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team (SAT) was established in December 2014 and comprises academic, administrative and technical support staff, a female undergraduate student involved in promoting women in engineering, and a professor external to the School with an interest in working practices (“Work less, do more, live better”, Times Higher Education, August 2014).
Faye Campbell is a final-year Electrical & Electronic Engineering student, who entered university via the Summer School for Access in 2010. She is a committee member of the Women in Engineering and the Electrical & Electronic Engineering student societies and has worked with Equate Scotland as a Student Champion since 2014.
Angela Henderson has worked as Secretary/School Finance Person within the School since 1994. She is involved in all aspects of school administration, with particular responsibility for final year students and finance. Married with 2 school-age children, she works 80% of full time.
Dr Ana Ivanović joined the University in 1998 as a PhD student, becoming Research Fellow in 2000, Lecturer in 2003 and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2008. She is the School’s Equality & Diversity Coordinator and Programme Leader for Civil Engineering, and is a member of the College Equality & Diversity Team and the University's Athena SWAN SAT. Ana has two school-age children, she works 80% of full time.
Professor Maria Kashtalyan (Co-Convenor) is Professor of Engineering and Director of the Centre for Micro- and Nano-mechanics. She joined the University in 2002 as a Research Fellow, becoming Senior Lecturer in 2007, Reader in 2011 and Personal Chair in 2014. She is married with one school-age daughter and balances work and family life along with her husband who is a senior academic in the School.
Dr Oleksandr Menshykov joined the University in 2005 as a Research Fellow, was promoted to Lecturer in 2008 and Senior Lecturer in 2012. He is the School’s Programme Leader for Mechanical Engineering and Level 3 Co-ordinator. His wife is a full-time Teaching Fellow in the School and they have two young sons.
Professor Tom O’Donoghue (Co-Convenor) is Professor of Engineering. He joined the University as Lecturer in 1990 and was Head of School for the period 2008 to 2013. He is married with five (mostly) grown-up children. His wife currently works full-time, having not worked for some years when the children were young.
Professor Ekaterina Pavlovskaia joined the University in 2000 as a Research Fellow, becoming Lecturer in 2003, Senior Lecturer in 2007, Reader in 2010 and Personal Chair in 2013. Her husband is a senior academic in the School and they have two school-age children.
Lisa Pritt is a Mechanical Technician in the School. She first joined the University in 2001, leaving in 2007 to spend time with her two young children, and re-joined the University in January 2015.
Professor Patience Schell is Chair in Hispanic Studies and a historian, who has worked at the University since 2012. In addition to her historical research, she is interested in using insights from psychology and neuroscience to inform evidence-based working practices. She is married and counts on informal flexible working and working from home to manage the various aspects of her life.
Dr Kate Sparrow joined the University in 2009 as a PhD student and has been working as a Research Fellow since 2013. She has made use of the University’s flexible working policy by switching to a part-time contract in 2014. She is married and had her first child in 2015.
Dr Carol Stannard joined the University in 2014 as Assistant College Registrar in the College of Physical Sciences. In 2015 she was appointed as the Interim College Registrar for Physical Sciences. She completed her PhD as a mature student and mother to three children. She is a member of the University’s Athena SWAN SAT and the College of Physical Sciences Equality & Diversity Committee.
Dr Mark Stewart completed both his undergraduate and PhD studies in the School of Engineering. He is currently a Research Fellow in the School and is part of a dual-career family with no children.
Dr Amer Syed joined the School as Lecturer in 2014, having previously been PhD student and Research Associate at Imperial College.
