Objectives

  • To compile a relational (Microsoft Access) database of passenger information from the Board of Trade records in The National Archives at selected intervals between 1890 and 1960.
  • To make available, in easily-accessible electronic format, the unique but unwieldy information contained in the Board of Trade outward passenger lists (TNA, BT 27).
  • To use this information to undertake investigations into the Scottish diaspora, with particular reference to geographical origins, occupations, age profile and family composition.
  • To compare the findings with those available through the published reports in the Board of Trade Journal held at the University of Hull.
  • To provide a powerful quantitative tool for research into Scottish emigration between 1890 and 1960.
  • To challenge stereotypes of Scottish emigration.
  • To build on the work of scholars working in the field of late nineteenth- and twentieth-century emigration, including Dudley Baines, Jeanette Brock, Enda Delaney, Tom Devine, Kent Fedorowich, Marjory Harper and Angela McCarthy.
