NEH & BAc Research FellowMy folklore interests centre on the performance of folk customs, and, in particular, the folk plays of Britain. I have organised two conferences on folk drama at Sheffield University; the second was held in 2002 and the papers from this conference were published as Folk Drama Studies Today.
My current research work is focused on the three hundred British folk plays in the James Madison Carpenter Collection and I am one of the team working at the Elphinstone Institute towards the publication of a critical edition of the collection, which is held in the American Folk Life Center at the Library of Congress, Washington. The project is funded by the British Academy and the National Endowment for the Humanities under the auspices of the American Folklore Society, and in association with the Library of Congress, Washington, DC.
