Talk by Janet Byth to Midstocket Church Guild, about the story of a typical country school in a farming community of North-East Scotland. Founded in 1831 as a 'subscription' elementary school, Fintry has been part of the Scottish education system since 1872, and continues to educate the local children today.
Janet Byth was brought up in the Fintry area and attended the primary school there. After attending Turriff Academy, she gained an Honours MA in English and History from the University of Aberdeen, and taught in secondary schools. She recently gained an MLitt by Research in Ethnology and Folklore from the Elphinstone Institute, on Fintry as a typical North-East rural elementary school.
