Ethnographic Film Series

MacRobert Building, MR051A filmic celebration of the true cultural landscape of Aberdeen, with Simon Gall of Station House Media Unit (SHMU).

During 2014 and 2015, Station House Media Unit established and ran a project called Collective Compositions. The project, which was funded by Creative Scotland, aimed to capture and celebrate the music of minority ethnic communities in Aberdeen through studio recordings and this documentary film.

The project worked with 16 acts as well as a seven-person film team to produce a compilation CD, a documentary film, and two live performances. The first performance was hosted by the Elphinstone Institute in January 2015 and the second at The Lemon Tree in March 2015.Musicians featured in the film include:

  • Noelia Gomez – Spanish vocalist

  • Rahul K Ravindran – Indian singer and musician

  • Javier Dominguez – flamenco guitarist and vocalist

  • You Li – Chinese violinist

  • Xavier Ortiz – Colombian salsa singer and güiro player

  • Soraya Forsyth – Thai khim player

  • Saowalak Chalk – Thai singer

  • Prithwis Banerjee – Indian vocalist

  • Drummin' Aboot – African Drumming Group

  • Polish-Scottish Song and Story Group

  • Bhakti Majumder – Indian vocalist

  • Jasna Martinovic – Serbian cellist

  • John Cairney – Scottish guitarist

  • Aranya Bhaduri – Indian multi-instrumentalist and singer

  • Xavier Ortiz – Colombian salsa vocalist
