About the Project

The project has three main strands

Online Catalogue The Carpenter project team has produced a searchable catalogue covering all the materials in Series 1 of the collection.

Digitization and Public Presentation Online The Carpenter Collection was digitized by the Library of Congress as part of its Save Our Sounds project. It will be publicly available via the Library of Congress's Performing Arts Encyclopedia.

Critical Edition A multi-volume edition of the folkloric materials in the Carpenter Collection is currently being prepared by the project team. It will be arranged by genre and sub-genre, with a complementary relationship to the online presentation of the collection. The edition will include new transcriptions of words and music from Carpenter's sound recordings, as well as Carpenter's transcriptions of items taken down from contributor dictation, plus comparative notes on the materials, biographical notes on Carpenter and the contributors, indexes, bibliography and glossaries.
