When the Elphinstone Institute was first set up, the seminal folklorist David Buchan was appointed Director Designate. Graduating with a degree and Phd. from Aberdeen University, this position would have meant David Buchan's return to Aberdeen and allowed him to pursue his life long interest in folklore of the North East. Unfortunately, David Buchan's untimely death prevented him from taking up the position within the Institute, but after his death in 1994, his wife bequeathed his library to the Elphinstone Institute. The Buchan Collection is now a vital part of Aberdeen University's folklore collection, and reflecting David Buchan's interest in North East folklore, the library holds an extensive range of texts on North East folklore studies. In addition to this, the library equally holds a collection of international folklore studies, as well a considerable collection of North East and Scottish Literature. The Buchan Library is held within the Elphinstone Institute, and the collection attracts a wide range of students from all disciplines of the Arts, including Cultural History, Literature, Scottish Studies as well as Ethnology and Folklore Studies.
The Buchan Library is available for consultation of books and journals, generally on production of student or staff I.D. between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, by arrangement with the Secretary.
