PGDE(S) Subject Studies - Religious Education

The PGDE(S) Religious Education Subject Studies course:

In broad outline, the course follows the following pattern. In School Experience 1, after an examination of RME/RMPS and its place in the curriculum in schools, basic curriculum knowledge and teaching skills are developed in the context of 5-14 RME, Standard Grade Religious Studies, SQA Short Courses in RME and National Qualifications in RMPS and in Philosophy. In School Experience 2, more emphasis is placed on progression in the subject through the secondary sector, based on some knowledge of practice in the primary sector and further consideration of national course guidelines and arrangements and on extended study of aspects of teaching and learning, for example: communication; learning styles; differentiation. In School Experience 3, in depth study of aspects of courses and consideration of a range of current issues in RME/RMPS are complemented by opportunities to extend and apply knowledge and develop specific skills identified by self-evaluation.

The contact class component of this module is implemented through a range of teaching and learning strategies. Activities include:

Open learning tasks are set for various purposes, including:

Often, such tasks are set as preparation for and follow up to associated contact sessions.

In addition, students undertake self-directed study. All activities contribute to the meeting of the relevant standards for initial teacher education.
