Learning to teach science is facilitated by staff with expertise in science and teaching in primary or secondary schools. In the BEd programme, as in the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence, science is a distinct area of study. However, as in primary schools, there are frequent opportunities to link science to other curriculum areas, such as social subjects, expressive arts and religious, moral and philosophical studies, to develop understanding of cross-curricular issues such as sustainability and global citizenship. Students are also encouraged to develop information and communications technology for teaching and learning. Students undertake activities which involve them in learning experiences designed to develop their understanding of how children learn about science and how they learn through science. Students also gain valuable insight into learning in science through the process of reflecting on their own learning. Practical activities in workshops and laboratories are supported and extended through participation in virtual learning environments. All aspects of learning to teach science are underpinned by study of the results of educational research. |
