Students benefit from the widening of their professional expertise through engagement with a professional topic. Students choose one from a range.
The Professional Topic aims to
- raise awareness about the National Targets for Health
- develop the concepts of health, health education and health promotion
- develop a Health Promoting School Policy
- examine school programmes and resources for health education
- develop the knowledge, skills and capacities to help beginning secondary teachers become effective health educators
- consider some of the contemporary health issues relevant to secondary schools in Scotland.
Distinctive Features

students are provided with the opportunity and support to carry out a detailed study of a health topic of their choosing

the close involvement of the Schools Programme Manager from the Health Education Board for Scotland (HEBS) and the Multi-Agency Training Co-ordinator (Child Protection) for North East Scotland exemplifies best practice in involving other relevant professional agencies
-
integration of the course with School Experience for action research when appropriate.

Note
As part of the core input to Learning and Teaching in Secondary Schools all students will experience lectures and workshops related to:
- The Health Promoting School Concept
- Bullying
- Protection from Abuse
- Dealing with Sensitive Issues
They are also expected to gain relevant experience when in schools by undertaking related school based tasks.
