Within the framework of the new BEd programme, French or German is offered as an Elective in Year 4. The Elective is predicated on two fundamental purposes: to develop students’ linguistic competence and to develop their skills in introducing the foreign language in appropriate ways to primary school children within the context of Curriculum for Excellence.
A thirty-six week programme which integrates school experience placements (18 weeks) and university-based learning (18 weeks). All students undertake studies in either one or two languages. Graduates are qualified to teach at secondary school level and are eligible for registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.
Within the framework of the PGDE programme, the Modern Languages course is offered as a component of Further Professional Studies. The course has two fundamental purposes: to develop the students’ existing linguistic competence and to develop their skills and confidence in introducing the foreign language in appropriate ways to primary school children within the context of Curriculum for Excellence.
Research interests of staff include: the linguistic competence of learners within the Scottish educational system and how this can be mapped on to the Common European Framework; theories of emergent cognition and how they impact on continuing professional development; the exploration and development of pedagogical dispositions.
Professional development is offered in the following areas: Modern Languages 5-14; planning for effective learning and teaching; transactional strategies instruction and the acquisition and development of listening, reading, writing and speaking skills at all stages; fine-tuning effective teaching strategies; knowing children - a broader look at assessing linguistic competence; MLPS training in French and German.
