Within Social Subjects, History lecturers contribute to:
PGDE (Secondary)
History uses workshops, seminars, visits and open learning to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the range of courses and qualifications within Scottish education. Among the main areas covered are:
- People in the Past within 5-14 Environmental Studies for S1/2 including alternative models of teaching, learning and assessment for attainment targets relating to Knowledge, Skills and Developing informed attitudes.
- The National Qualifications in History at Standard Grade in S3/4 and at Intermediate, Higher and Advanced Higher Level developing an appreciation of teaching and learning issues related to course structure, assessment and national standards.
Links between History and other areas of the curriculum such as the Literacy and Numeracy strategies and to Core Skills including Working with Others and ICT within the subject context.

BEd/PGDE (Primary)
History is one of the components within Environmental Studies 5-14. Through a range of lectures, workshops and other learning experiences such as visits and fieldwork, the course develops learning and teaching strategies for the main aspects of 5-14 People in the Past within these Guidelines:
- knowledge and understanding strands relating to:
- people, events and societies of significance in the past
- change and continuity, cause and effect
- time and historical sequence
- the nature of historical evidence.
- the skill strand of preparing, carrying out and reviewing and reporting on tasks related to enquiry. Students evaluate a range of resources including texts and electronic sources such as the Internet and CD-ROMs.
- developing informed attitudes including emphasising the concepts of justice, equality of opportunity for all, understanding of the interaction of people and their environment in the past and the importance of our natural, social and cultural heritage.

CPD and In-service Courses
Lecturers contribute to regional in-service and other courses aimed at updating and broadening knowledge and debate for both Primary and Secondary teachers of the main issues in education for History, Environmental Studies and Citizenship in Scotland.
