Make a difference - Teach Technological Education

Opportunities for new routes into teaching Technological Education

The University of Aberdeen, in collaboration with local FE Colleges has developed a new BSc Technology with Education degree programme for school leavers and adults working in the engineering industry who would like to develop their skills and pass them on to others by becoming teachers of Technological Education. Students on University Engineering programmes may transfer into the programme, usually at the beginning of programme year 3. The programme will run for the first time starting in August 2004.

Routes

click for full sized imageOne route provides you with an HND in Mechatronics at Banff and Buchan College, which will give you skills, knowledge and understanding of integrated mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering. There is a direct path to a programme in the University of Aberdeen which will provide more in-depth study of engineering topics and equip you to teach Technological Education in schools.

Another route is direct entry to the programme at the University of Aberdeen, either at first year level or by transfer from another university engineering programme.

The existing route of B.Eng./Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary)* is available if you wish to study to Honours level - you should consult the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Aberdeen or at another university for details of entry to a B.Eng. degree programme. The School of Education of the University of Aberdeen offers a PGDE (S) qualification, a one year programme for Engineering graduates to qualify as teachers.

What is the job like?

A Technological Education teacher works in a rich and stimulating environment, teaching a wide range of subjects: Craft and Design/Product Design, Graphic Communication, Practical Craft Skills and Technological Studies. The emphasis is on design and problem solving in practice, and on working with young people.

What are the job prospects?

There is currently a shortage of Technological Education teachers throughout the UK, and the opportunities for job and promotion prospects in this subject should therefore be good. There is a particular shortage in the North East of Scotland, where many vacancies for teachers of Technological Education are currently unfilled. Graduates who meet SAAS funding criteria are currently guaranteed a paid, one year placement in a Scottish secondary school under the Scottish Executive Education Department's Teacher Induction Scheme, following which they will be fully qualified to teach in Scotland and in most countries in the world.

How will I be selected?

You will need at least the minimum entry qualifications indicated on the diagram (contact the FE college for details of entry qualifications for an HND Mechatronics). All applicants for the programme require Higher English or equivalent before commencing the University part of the programme. FE students can take their English qualification in conjunction with their HND.

Selection for the programme at the University of Aberdeen will be by interview, normally involving a University lecturer and a school representative. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate:

Every effort is made to make the interview relaxed and informal.
