Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Primary)

BEd (Primary) Primary Teaching is an exciting and demanding job, requiring a variety of knowledge and professional skills in communication and management. Teachers must be able to relate to other people and have the ability to exercise a considerable degree of understanding, judgement and patience.

Primary teachers teach all aspects of the curriculum so the 4-year full time undergraduate BEd Programme equips students to teach with an enhanced understanding of the aims and principles of Curriculum for Excellence. Curriculumfor Excellence aims to ensure that all children and young peoplein Scotland develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they require to flourish in life, learning and work, now and in the future.

This programme was developed as part of the national research and development project, Scottish Teachers for a New Era,at the forefront of Initial Teacher Education in Scotland, seeking to prepare teachers for the challenges and changes facing the profession in the 21st Century. Students will have the opportunity to develop the knowledge, understanding, skills and values required in primary teaching.

Through the programme, beginner teachers are encouraged to recognise that learning begins at birth and is sustained and nurtured in the home and across every environment with which the child comes into contact.  The programme leads to a qualification to teach children in the 3–12 age range with registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland. Overfour years, it combines academic study with practical inquiry in a variety of school settings and their communities. Following graduation, the new teacher network provides continued opportunity for academic and professional development.

During the four year course students are placed in schools within our partnership authorities for observation and later for assessed school experience. Through enquiry, personally held assumptions, values and beliefs about effective learning within systems of education will be challenged.
