STREAP: Language Development and Critical Reflection for Teaching in Gaelic Medium
Our STREAP programme aims to meet the needs of fully qualified educationalists who want to:
- To enhance and extend professional practice in the teaching of subject/stage through the medium of Gaelic
- To provide knowledge and understanding of the range of theoretical (including historical) perspectives – interpretive, social, creative – relating to immersion and bilingual teaching and the promotion of Gaelic Medium Education
- To familiarise students with the support structures available in Gaelic education e.g. CLAS; Stòrlann
- To provide the advanced knowledge and understanding and skills required to deliver subject/stage through Gaelic medium
- To provide a critical appreciation of how the key concepts of language understanding and development are integrated into subject/stage teaching and how they impact on each other.
- To give participants opportunities to understand and review critically pedagogies used to deliver their stage/subject through Gaelic medium
- To examine theories of learning in the context of Gaelic medium and to engage the participants in an interrogation of how the Gaelic language is used in the classroom to teach the subject/stage and how children use the Gaelic language
- To examine policy initiatives and their relationship with Gaelic Medium education e.g. Curriculum for Excellence, Citizenship, etc
- To develop the relevant Gaelic language skills so that participants are able through their subject/stage teaching to:
- analyse pupils' reactions to determine whether blocks in learning are conceptual, subject-specific or linguistic
- build in much more opportunities to use the target language in expositions, explanations and interactions with pupils than would (perhaps) be the case in English
- respond to specific language points which arise – whether to respond to them immediately, or later, or at all
- gain experience about the levels of error tolerance which are appropriate in different circumstance
- o reinforce the acquisition of the language as well as the skills, concepts and knowledge associated with the subject/stage
- reflect on knowledge, skills, practice and professional development needs within the context of Gaelic medium teaching
