Course Leaflet (pdf)
The APS programme is available on a part-time study by e-learning basis. Participants study part-time at a distance while staying in post in their own professional setting. There are no travel requirements to visit us on campus for study or assessment purposes. Reliable internet access is essential.
The distinctive feature of the programme is its strong focus on transformative professionalism – an enhanced and extended professionalism which has at its core the need for practitioners to take evidence-based action to generate professional knowledge and move practice forward. This form of professionalism, in contrast with older formulations, is characterised not by self interest and external regulation, but rather by the motivation to contribute to the collaborative development of practice and make informed contributions to professional debate.
The Advanced Professional Studies (APS) programme aims to promote:
The programme is comprised of:
*SCQF refers to the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework and Level 11 within this framework describes study at postgraduate taught masters level.
The Negotiated Independent Study (15 credits at SCQF Level 11) or Negotiated Extended Study (30 credits at SCQF Level 11) courses may be taken as alternative courses to increase further, opportunities to deepen study into specialist areas of personal interest or professional relevance. No substitution is allowed for courses 4 and 6 however.
Appropriate courses may be combined to create a Certificate programme carrying 60 credits. Participants who have completed successfully other courses or certificates offered by the School of Education, and thereby gained 60 credits at SCQF Level 11, may enter the programme at the diploma entry point and move directly to undertake course four, Professional Enquiry.
Appropriate courses may be combined to create a Diploma programme carrying 120 credits. After completing 120 credits participants may complete:
The Work-based Project necessarily involves the identification of a problem and professional action in the form of an Action Research project to invent and test a solution.
The Dissertation study can take any form including an empirical investigation, a theory-driven exploration or library based study.
Courses (with the exception of Professional Enquiry and Dissertation or Work-based Project) may be achieved by preparation of a claim for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) An APL claim is normally limited to 50% of the award sought.
The programme is available in full e-learning mode via WEB CT. Participants are encouraged to be active and reflective learners and great emphasis is placed on professional action in the workplace setting. Our programme challenges participants to direct their own professional growth, as they set and achieve new standards of enhanced professionalism and academic excellence.
Formative assessment is a feature of all courses. Formative and summative assessments are designed to arise naturally in the workplace and from course work. Most assessment tasks focus on workplace applications and/or critical reflection on policy and practice. Each course is assessed by a set assignment.
