Advanced Educational Studies

Our Advanced Educational Studies (AES) programme aims to meet the needs of early career and experienced educationalists and teaching practitioners who want to:

The AES programme is available on a full-time on-campus study basis.  Participants are required to attend classes in Aberdeen between late September through to May and to complete a dissertation for submission in the following September.

The Advanced Educational Studies (AES) programme aims to enhance and extend the advanced professional skills, knowledge and understanding of the students by:

  1. developing knowledge and understanding of current educational issues and theories
  2. developing the skills and critical analysis to support professional judgements
  3. making informed contributions to currrent educational debates
  4. applying knowledge and understanding to enhance personal professional (teaching and learning) practice
  5. developing the capacity to shape and lead change
  6. exploiting opportunities to use research to generate professional knowledge and enhance policy and practice.

Programme Structure

The programme is comprised of:

*SCQF refers to the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework and Level 11 within this framework describes study at postgraduate taught masters level.

All courses are compulsory, but some may be substituted for under special circumstances and with prior agreement of the Programme Director.  No substitution is possible in the case of Courses 4 and 6.

The programme is designed to provide breadth, balance and progression, and increasing opportunities for students to assume responsibility for the direction and focus of their own studies.  

The Dissertation study can take any form including an empirical investigation, a theory-driven exploration or library based study.

Teaching and Assessment

Support for learning and development is provided in a number of forms, including:

Assessment modes and instruments will vary according to the purpose of the assessment.

Students will complete five summative assessments, one examination paper and a dissertation for summative assessment purposes.

Assessment serves formative, summative and evaluative purposes within individual courses and programmes of study.  Thus assessment is used to support learning, provide evidence of individual achievement, provide insights into the quality of learning and inform review of the design and delivery of courses.
