Chartered Teacher Programme

APL Information

There are two types of APL:

  • APFL is the Accreditation of Prior Formal Learning.  This is the process by which appropriate certified learning at Masters level, such as Postgraduate modules, certificates, diplomas and degrees are given credit towards another qualification, in this case the Chartered Teacher programme.  Normally, these qualifications should have been completed within the last 5 years.
  • APEL is the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning.  It is a process by which appropriate experiential and uncertificated learning is given recognition and an academic value.  Often the academic value is expressed in terms of academic credit points (a measure of volume) at a particular level (a measure of sophistication).
Experiential learning encompasses knowledge, skills and behaviour acquired in a planned or unplanned way through life, especially work and work-related activities.  In this case APEL will be related to recent work you have undertaken in your classroom and/or school and/or activities you have been involved in at a local or national level.
