The Skilled Attendance for Everyone (SAFE) International Research Partnership Workshop, entitled "Developing a strategy for skilled attendance: Experiences from SAFE", was held in Aberdeen on the 10th and 11th February 2003.

The objectives of the workshop were two-fold:

• To introduce the SAFE Strategy Development Tool
• To review the experiences of conducting the SAFE study in five partner countries

Dr. Paul Van Look, Chair of the SAFE Advisory Board and Director of the Department of Reproductive Health and Research at the World Health Organization gave an opening keynote address. This was followed by a presentation entitled "Skilled attendance and the age of evidence: the origins of SAFE" by Professor Wendy Graham, Principal Investigator of SAFE and Director of the Dugald Baird Centre for Research on Women's Health. Panel discussions and parallel sessions were held, providing details on country experiences and demonstration protocols from the five SAFE collaborating countries (Bangladesh, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi and Mexico). Further sessions provided orientation on methods used in the SAFE Strategy Development Tool. A closing address was made by SAFE funding agencies, the Advisory Board and Professor Graham.

40% (n=26) evaluation forms were returned on completion of the workshop. Participants generally provided very positive feedback indicating that the workshop was relevant and of interest. Some participants felt the workshop should have been made longer to allow attendance at more parallel sessions and also to obtain more detail about the methods used in the Strategy Development Tool.

We are pleased to present a series of newsletters aimed at proving up to date information on the progress on the European Commission and Department for International Development funded Skilled Attendance For Everyone (S.A.F.E.) Study. The newsletter will be produced 6 monthly.
