About the Department | Undergraduate Study | Postgraduate Study | Staff Directory | News & Events Undergraduate Subject AreasUndergraduate study at the School is divided into courses on Divinity and courses on Religious Studies. Whilst both focus on religious traditions, and are often attended by many of the same students, the two disciplines are distinct in terms of how they approach their subject. DivinitySubjects in Divinity concentrate on the study of Christian faith, life and doctrine in a historical, cross-cultural and contemporary context. It incorporates study and research in the following five areas: Church History, Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, New Testament, Practical Theology and Systematic Theology. There is also the option to study one or more of the languages of the Bible as a route to understanding Biblical writers, thinkers and commentators in their original form. Religious StudiesReligious Studies is concerned with the general study of religious traditions, including Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. It uses historical, philosophical and anthropological approaches to the study of religious traditions, and asks why it is that historically humans have always tended to organise their social life and communities around religious ideas. It challenges students to think about religion, society and the world in which we live from a variety of perspectives, to think critically about our own beliefs and opinions, and to understand how they might be viewed by others. Fuller details regarding these courses are available in the Undergraduate Prospectus. This page was last modified on: Monday, 28-Jan-2013 09:53:33 GMT School of Divinity, History and
