About the Department | Undergraduate Study | Postgraduate Study | Staff Directory | News & Events Undergraduate DegreesThe School offers four qualifications at undergraduate level:
Master of Arts (MA) in Religious StudiesThe MA in Religious Studies combines a rigorous core of religious studies courses with a choice to either concentrate on religious studies or combine wide variety of subjects in Arts and Social Sciences (including languages, Cultural History, English, History, History of Art, International Relations, Philosophy, Politics, and Sociology). Students recieve a cutting-edge understanding of the world's major religious traditions (such as Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism), their historical development and importance in the modern world, as well as studying the ritual, social and political realities of religious communities. The degree also gives students the opportunity to explore a wide diversity of courses in the Arts and Social Sciences, and may be taken as a general or designated degree in three years, or as part of a joint or combined degree in four years. In first year at least one third of the credits required must be taken in the School, in second year half, and for single honours at least seven out of the eight honours papers (fewer in the case of the joint or combined honours; three out of four in the case of the designated degree).Up-to-date course choices available this year can be viewed in the course catalogue (N.B.: course availability may change from year to year). Master of Arts (MA) in DivinityThe MA in Divinity is designed to give students wishing to concentrate in the study of the Christian tradition greater flexibility in taking courses across the Arts Faculty than is possible with the BD or the BTh degrees. Students are welcome to take courses from any of the School's subdisciplines (New Testament, Old Testament, church history, practical theology, religious studies, or systematic theology) in fulfillment of the progress requirements. The degree may be taken as a designated degree, as a single honours degree or (in combination with a wide variety of subjects ranging from Finance to Modern Languages to Sociology and Women's Studies) as part of a joint or combined honours programme. In first year at least one third of the credits required must be taken in the School, in second year half, and for single honours at least seven out of the eight honours courses (fewer in the case of the joint or combined honours; three out of four in the case of the designated degree). Up-to-date course choices available this year can be viewed in the course catalogue (N.B.: course availability may change from year to year). Bachelor of DivinityThe BD is designed for students who wish to concentrate on the Christian tradition in their studies. It is also recommended for ordinands. The study of the biblical languages (Hebrew and Greek) by candidates for this degree is encouraged, though it is not compulsory. The requirements of the degree offer candidates only limited opportunity to study subjects outwith the School of Divinity and Religious Studies. The courses leading to the BD normally take four years, but students who already possess a degree may graduate after three years of study. All candidates for the degree must take courses at Levels 1 and 2 in each of the five traditional theological disciplines and at least the Level 1 course in Religious Studies. At Level 3, they may choose further courses mostly within those offered by the School, thought it is permissible to take up to six credits in courses outwith the School. Candidates for Honours may specialise in subjects from one theological discipline or combine a majority of subjects from two disciplines or simply 'pick and mix', depending on the degree of specialisation which they feel most appropriate for them. Bachelor of TheologyThe BTh is designed to be less structured than the BD. It provides greater opportunities to take courses in Religious Studies and to combine the study of theology and religion with some subjects offered outwith the School of Divinity and Religious Studies (e.g. French, English, History, Sociology, Chemistry, Computer Studies). It is appropriate to the needs of those intending to teach Religious and Moral Educaion in secondary schools. The Biblical languages may also be studied as part of the degree. The courses leading to the BTh normally take three years for the general degree and four years for the Honours degree. All candidates for the degree must take at least two-thirds of the credits required at Level 1 in the School and three-quarters (half in the case of Honours) at Level 2 and three-quarters at Level 3 and Honours. Further details regarding the structure of the degrees are available in the University Undergraduate Prospectus.
