Research Interests

My reserach interests include

  • Early Qur'an, Sira and Hadith literature (in the broad sense)
  • The relations between the above and other religious and literary traditions (for example Jewish, Christian and Greek)
  • The relations between religious and folk literature

My current research touches upon the following themes:

  • Literary paradigms within the Hadith and Sira literature
  • Stories of the Prophets in Islam
  • Demonology in Islam
  • Islam and ambivalence
  • Transmission of knowledge

Teaching Responsibilities

  • RS2001 Islam — An introductory Course to the Islamic religion and culture.
  • RS3010 The life of Muhammad — The biography of the Prophet of Islam analysed from a literary point of view, and confronted with various scholaraly approaches.
  • DR4543 Qur'an, DR552J Qur'an and Commentary — Various aspects of the Qur'an, its content, challenges, commentaries and approaches towards it - from the classical age to contemporary issues.

  • I co-chair the Quran and Islamic Tradition in Comparative Perspective unit of the ISBL

  • I coordinate the interdisciplinary MLitt programme in Islamic Studies
  • I convene the research seminar in Religious Studies
