Biography

A childhood split between my native California and Japan, where my parents undertook missionary service, found a certain coherence in the reading of books. This led first to undergraduate studies in English literature, and latterly to the cultivation of theological interests, which I pursued first at Fuller Theological Seminary and then at Oxford University. I have been teaching systematic theology in Aberdeen since 2005.

Research Interests

In the most general terms, my research focuses on central issues in Christian dogmatics and on the more recent history of Christian theology in the West. I have a particular interest in the doctrine of scripture, and I am working towards developing an account of the transformation of that doctrine in modern theology. I also have an ongoing interest in the theology of Karl Barth: Following on from earlier work on Barth's theology of scriptural interpretation, I currently am working particularly on Barth's writing from the 1920s, looking at his exegetical and historical work, as well as some neglected themes in his dogmatics.

Teaching Responsibilities

I currently offer an introductory course in Christian doctrine as well as seminars on creation and eschatology and on the doctrine of scripture. I lead a postgraduate seminar on the use of the Bible in Christian theology.

In recent years, I have taught a module on the nature and authority of scripture in the Reformed tradition as part of the Aberdeen/Pittsburgh Theological Seminary DMin programme. And I have coordinated and/or taught on several other undergraduate courses, including seminars on Scottish theology, modern Christian doctrine, and christology and soteriology.

I also coordinate, with my New Testament colleague Dr Tomas Bokedal, a postgraduate seminar in hermeneutics.
