Master of Theology (MTh) in Church History

The taught MTh is intended to give students with an undergraduate background in Divinity, Religious Studies or Religious History an opportunity to study Church History at an advanced level and to acquire the skills and background necessary for independent postgraduate research and teaching in this area. It will also appeal to those who wish to further an interest in Christian History as part of a programme of life-long learning.

SYLLABUS

I Students are required to take two required courses in research training:

  • Theology in the University
  • Dissertation Colloquium and research skills

These courses form the core of this taught MTh programme in Divinity and Religious Studies.

II In addition, students take a further two elective courses chosen from available electives in the subject area, including

  • The Reformation in Scotland
  • The Followers of Lady Poverty: St Francis and His Disciples
  • The Christian Doctrine of God
  • Witchcraft, Traditional Practices and the Rise of a Protestant Culture in Early Modern Scotland
  • Protestant Identities in the Early Modern British Isles
  • Canon Law and Lawyers in the Middle Ages

III Students also write a supervised dissertation of approximately 20,000 words on a topic related to the degree.

Assessment: The taught courses will be assessed by course work, by written examination, or by a combination of these, as prescribed for each course. The dissertation course will be assessed by submission of the dissertation. An oral examination may be held at the discretion of the Examiners. The degree of MTh shall not be awarded to candidates who fail to achieve a CAS mark of 9 or above in the dissertation, irrespective of their performance in other courses; such candidates may, at the discretion of the Examiners, be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma if they have achieved the appropriate number of credits for that award.
