About the Department | Undergraduate Study | Postgraduate Study | Staff Directory | News & Events Diploma in Pastoral Studies (DPS)12-month full-time; 24-month part-time. For those who have academic and pastoral experience but who do not wish to undertake specialised research, the School offers a one-year course leading to the Diploma in Pastoral Studies. The course is based on a curriculum from which candidates must choose four subjects. Candidates must also undertake prescribed fieldwork such as parish or industrial mission, or residential care of children, the elderly or the terminally ill. The course is also open to candidates who wish to pursue part-time study, in which case the period of study is not less than 24 months. Although the course is primarily in pastoral and practical theology, it is possible for candidates to include some Biblical and theological study at a more theoretical level. As with other courses offered by the School, the various subjects are open to non-graduating students who do not wish to take an Aberdeen qualification, and they may be recognised for credit with candidates' parent-institutions. It may also be possible for candidates to take selected elements of this course where, for instance, a minister has only three to six months of sabbatical leave available. Course choices are drawn from the School's existing postgraduate curriculum.
