What sort of history, if any, are the Gospels? These lectures will explore the kind of history the Gospels are by relating them to historiography in the ancient world and to recent developments and discussions in modern historiography.

The lectures will consider such topics as:

  • the Gospels as ancient biography and as eyewitness testimony
  • the Gospels as 'history from below' and as 'microhistory'
  • the Gospels as perspectival history

Renouncing the attempt to construct a historical Jesus other than the Jesus of the Gospels, the lectures will consider how historical work can contribute more appropriately to our understanding of Jesus.

Richard Bauckham is Professor of New Testament Studies and Bishop Wardlaw Professor in the University of St Andrews. Previously he taught historical and contemporary theology at the University of Manchester. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His latest book is Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony (forthcoming).
