Graduating this summer?

31 May 2012

If you are graduating this summer, please remember that your University of Aberdeen computer account will be closed from Thursday 21 June 2012.

 Closure of computer accounts

Once your account is closed, you will no longer have access to University computing facilities including the wireless service (ResNet/Eduroam), computer classrooms, (including printing), MyAberdeen, the Student Portal, your H: drive (pchomes) file space, and Sophos antivirus.

Note: If you are a medic, you will continue to have access until the end of July. You will then be rolled forward to the post grad FY1 year when you can e-register and continue to have access

Your H: Drive (pchomes) filespace

If there are files on your H: drive that you wish to retain, please ensure you have copied them onto CD or DVD before 21 June; or upload them to your Studentmail SkyDrive - you have 25GB of filespace there.

Proxy settings

You will no longer be able to connect to the internet via the University’s central proxy server [www.abdn.ac.uk/proxy] and should remove the proxy settings from your web browser. If you need help, contact the Service Desk - servicedesk@abdn.ac.uk.

Sophos Antivirus software

If you are using Sophos Antivirus software, as provided by the University, on your personal computer, you should be aware that the University’s site licence for Sophos expires on 12 June 2012 and will not be renewed. If you do not uninstall Sophos before 12 June, you will be running unlicensed software and your computer will be at risk as you will no longer be receiving updates from Sophos.

If you have Sophos installed on your personal computer, please remove it following the instructions at the foot of this page and install alternative antivirus software.

Studentmail

Your Studentmail email account, however, is for life! You can retain your email account and associated facilities, such as SkyDrive, for as long as you want allowing you to keep in touch with the friends you have made during your time at University.

Note, however, that the content of your account will be automatically removed if not accessed for 180 consecutive days. If removed, an empty inbox will appear the next time you login.

Please also remember that DIT does not provide support for Studentmail once you have graduated from the University of Aberdeen. This includes password changes. If you wish to change your email login password once you have left the University, you will need to do so via Studentmail. Simply login to www.outlook.com/aberdeen.ac.uk, then click on Options > See All Options... (top right), select Change your password from the list of Shortcuts on the right hand side of the ensuing dialog, and follow the onscreen guidelines. Similarly, if you forget your password or if you have failed to set up your secret questions in Studentmail, go to: http://login.live.com/ and click Help Center at the foot of the page for guidance.
