Computing accounts for visitors

There are two types of computing account available for visitors to the University, Guest Accounts and Temporary Accounts.

Note: Neither account is suitable for casual visitors to the University or city. At this time, we are unable to provide internet access to such groups.

Guest accounts

Guest accounts are for short-term use by visiting academics, researchers, business partners, collaborators or conference attendees.

  • All Guest accounts are free of charge, and allow basic internet access only.
  • Additional access to a SharePoint site is available where relevant to external collaborators.
  • To request or create Guest accounts:
    • If you are a guest, ask your University of Aberdeen host or sponsoring department what arrangements are being made for you.
    • If you are the host, you can create Guest accounts automatically using
our online request form. The accounts can be available within 30 minutes. Hosts must be full members of staff.

Temporary accounts

Temporary accounts are specifically for groups on short courses or summer schools who require access to computing classroom software.

  • Requests for temporary accounts are made on behalf of groups by the relevant University host, e.g. academic department/administrative section, via the Service Desk.
  • Hosts should allow 5 working days for Temporary Account requests to be processed.

Accessing the wireless network

Visitors from institutions that participate in the eduroam service can connect to our wireless network with the same username and password they use at their own institution.

Otherwise, the userid and password issued with a Guest or Temporary account (see above) will allow visitors to connect to the wireless network.

For guidance on using the wireless network at Aberdeen,

see our wireless web pages - www.abdn.ac.uk/wireless/visitors.shtml
