European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)

The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is a relevant and internationally recognised qualification that certifies you have the knowledge and skills needed to use common computer applications. ECDL is the fastest-growing IT user qualification in the world, and is now available in over 140 countries.

The ECDL syllabus covers the key concepts of computing and its practical applications in both the workplace, and in society in general. Studying for your ECDL allows you to develop your IT skills, enhance your career prospects, and obtain a recognised, benchmark qualification. No prior knowledge of IT or computer skills is required to study for the ECDL.

There are two levels of ECDL qualifications.

  • Core ECDL is divided into 7 modules, which together clearly indicate your level of IT competence. To obtain your Core ECDL, you must pass examinations in all 7 of the modules.
  • Advanced ECDL holders are recognised as having IT competence at a much higher level with particular applications. There are 4 Advanced Modules available. You study for, are examined in, and receive accreditation for, each Module independently.

The Directorate's Training & Documentation (TaD) Team is a BCS-accredited, A-Status, Test Centre for the ECDL. If you are a member of the University - staff or student - or are part of the local community, you can register with us and sit your ECDL examinations in one of our private, on-campus training rooms.
