Student Liaison

My job as the Student Liaison Officer is to ensure that DIT is aware of the needs and concerns of our students, and to keep students apprised of developments within the IT service and how they might be affected. Working closely with all those concerned with students including the Students’ Association, the Vice Principal for Learning and Teaching my role is to try ensure that real change is made where needed.

I am continually trying to increase contact with both undergraduate and postgraduate students including attendance at Staff Student Liaison Committees (SSLCs). At these meetings, I detail proposed changes to DIT managed facilities and explain how these changes may affect students. Any queries the student representatives have are either answered then and there, or noted and a response given later.

I also have the opportunity to listen to student concerns about the use, and sometimes abuse, of IT facilities. Many Departments and Schools have invited me to attend their SSLCs. It is by attending these meetings that I, and therefore DIT, can really listen and respond to student views, concerns and opinions on the service we provide.

One aspect of the job which is less than rewarding is to ensure that students do not breach the Conditions for using IT Facilities and if they do to invoke the disciplinary procedures that such a breach results in.

If you have any queries, comments or suggestions regarding the provision of IT facilities for students please contact me; I operate an 'open door' policy and am also willing to listen. I am here to help you.
