Unable to use or access Internet Explorer in the classrooms?

If you log onto a classroom PC and see the error message IE launcher failed to create preferences file (code 2/prefs load), you will be unable to use or access Internet Explorer.

This is because your preferences file - prefs.ie - for Internet Explorer is corrupted. prefs.ie is stored on your H: drive and contains information on how Internet Explorer opens. Internet Explorer needs to be able to write to the this file every time you log in.

How do I fix this?

  • The most common reason why the prefs.ie file becomes corrupted is because you have reached your filespace limit on your H: drive.
  • If you are NOT over your filespace limit, you will need to create a new copy of the prefs.ie file.
    • Open My Computer from the Desktop and browse to your H: drive.
    • Locate and open the folder H:/ie5 and delete the prefs.ie and prefs.ie7 files.
Internet Explorer should open normally and a new copy of the prefs.ie file will be created.
