Relationship Management for COPS
Introduction | College Communications | Previous experience
Russell Moffatt is the Relationship Manager for the College of Physical Sciences (COPS).
Introduction
I joined the University in October 2007 and have spent my time since familiarising myself with the higher education environment, gaining a level of understanding of the colleges' IT requirements and identifying where DIT can provide support, while working within the Directorate to help enhance our customer facing aspects.
My professional interests focus on IT service management and in transforming IT organisations from technical 'black boxes' into transparent, responsive, customer-led organisations that can demonstrate alignment with business strategy and deliver consistent, value-adding IT services. I have chartered IT Professional membership of the British Computer Society and have Service Level Manager Practitioner accreditation against the ITIL IT Service Management best practice framework.
Outside work, I am a keen football fan. My team will always be Dumbarton FC, no matter how bad they get (and trust me, they can get very bad indeed). My son, however, is a keen Aberdeen supporter and we are often to be found watching games at Pittodrie. I also manage and coach the Ellon Meadows FC under 13’s football team. In addition to being a Level 3 SFA certified coach at both Child and Youth level, I am also the club’s Chairman and Player Protection Officer.
College Communications
Within CoPS I am part of the extended college administration team working closely with the College Registrar. I also liaise with heads of school regularly and with other academic staff, as required. A major element of my role is to provide a direct link between the college and DIT that did not exist previously.
I sit on the following committees where my role is to provide advice and guidance on IT and business process issues, and to facilitate communications and actions with DIT, where appropriate.
- College of Physical Sciences Teaching & Learning Committee
- College of Physical Sciences Technical & Operational IT Group
- Fraser Noble Refurbishment Operational Sub Board
- Postgraduate Strategy Advisory Group
I also contribute articles to the College Bulletin to advise on IT issues affecting the college and new or improved services being provided by DIT.
Current College activities
- further improve communications between CoPS and DIT and ensure that mutually beneficial IT services are provided
- facilitate the migration of locally provided services to central provision where this in beneficial to the institution
- identify, support and facilitate business process improvements via the use of relevant technologies
- provide support to college projects where appropriate
Previous Experience
My background is in the energy sector and I have spent most of my working life in the oil & gas industry. I was involved with information and document management on a variety of major offshore engineering projects before moving into Information Technology. For the ten years prior to joining DIT, I worked for the global engineering services company AMEC, dealing with IT service management and delivery across the UK and latterly in the Middle East, Western Africa, and the Caspian.
