Set your browser proxy settings

Once you have connected to the wireless service, you will need to set the University proxy before accessing the Web.

Windows XP or Vista

Internet Explorer 7 & 8

Open Internet Explorer

  • Go to Tools > Internet Options
  • Click on Connections tab
  • Click on LAN settings
  • Tick Automatically detect settings
  • Click OK until all windows are closed
  • Close Internet Explorer and re-open before browsing the Web
     

Mac OS X

Unless you are using the Firefox browser, you will have to set the proxy settings on your Mac manually – see instructions for Internet Explorer and Safari, below.

Firefox

  • Open Firefox and select Preferences from the Firefox menu

  • Select Advanced then click on the Network tab and click on Settings

  • then select Auto-detect proxy settings for this network

Internet Explorer or Safari

  • From the Apple menu, select System Preferences, then Network
  • From the Network dialog, select New Location… from the drop-down Location menu

  • Name your new location: University of Aberdeen wireless

  • Complete the Network dialog as follows:
  • Ensure the Location is University of Aberdeen wireless
  • Ensure Airport is selected from the Show: option
  • Select the Proxies tab
  • Configure Proxies should be set to Manually
  • In the Select a proxy server to configure window, scroll down and tick Automatic Proxy Configuration
  • In the Proxy Configuration File URL: text box, type in: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/local/autoproxy.php
  • Click the Apply Now button, then close the Network dialog
     
  • From the Apple menu, select Location, then University of Aberdeen wireless

  • You can now launch your browser and use the internet.

Windows Mobile PDA

  • Tap Start -> Settings
  • Select the Connections Tab and click Connections

  • Tick This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet
  • Tap Advanced

    Port: 8080
    Username: Enter your username
    Password: Enter your username
  • Tap OK
  • Tap OK
  • Tap OK

Your PDA is now configured to use.
