Setting a specific (manual) proxy

PC users - Internet Explorer:
In some cases, Internet Explorer appears to ignore automatic proxy settings; if you find that the automatic proxy arrangement doesn't work for you (though 99 times out of 100 it should), you can set IE to use a specific proxy as follows (these instructions are for dial-up users, see the section at the
end of this page for users on the campus network):

Step 1:
Use the menu sequence Tools | Internet Options and select the Connections tab. Highlight the relevant entry from the Dial-up Settings box. Select the Settings button.

Proxy settings

Step 2:
Check the box labelled Use a proxy server and into the Address box enter proxy.abdn.ac.uk and into the Port box enter 8080. Leave all other boxes unchecked.

If you then click on the Advanced button on the same window, you should see identical values displayed there.

Note that you may need to restart Internet Explorer before the new settings will take effect.

For Users connected to the Campus Network

If you need to set a specific proxy and your PC is connected to the campus network, then you will need to select the LAN Settings button within IE's menus before proceeding with Step 2 above. In addition, you should add the value *.abdn.ac.uk into the box labelled Exceptions on the Advanced settings page (see figure 2). These settings will cause the proxy to be used for all Web sites except those within the .abdn.ac.uk network. .

Macintosh users - please see the section for Macintosh users.
