How to configure the Opera Browser to use the automatic proxy

As the Opera Web browser is mentioned elsewhere as an alternative to Internet Explorer and Firefox for some users, brief instructions on setting it up to use the University proxy are appropriate and are given here.

Opera from version 6 onwards supports automatic proxy configuration. Versions 5 and earlier do not. For these versions you must set a proxy manually as follows:

Preferences

Select the menus:

File | Preferences | Network

and click on the button labelled Proxy servers....

Then make sure that only the box labelled Use automatic proxy configuration is ticked and into the box beneath it enter the URL:

http://www.abdn.ac.uk/local/autoproxy.php

(note the forward slashes, backslashes (\) will not work!)

Proxy servers

Notice that version 7.5x (and perhaps others) of Opera does not support automatic proxy configuration (or rather it does support it but the feature doesn't work), you must set the proxy manually by ticking the HTTP box and entering proxy.abdn.ac.uk as the proxy server and 8080 as the Port value.
