FAQ

Using a broadband connection?

There are 3 main types of broadband (ADSL) connection:

  1. an external USB ADSL modem
  2. an ADSL router connecting by a wire to a network card on your computer
  3. an ADSL wireless router

Users of Internet Explorer and MS Windows
Type 1 appears as a traditional dial-up connection within Internet Explorer's Options menu and so requires any proxy you use to be configured as for a dial-up connection.

Types 2 and 3 appear as LAN (local area network) connections, in the same way as the connection would be seen by a computer connected directly to the University network. You should therefore set the proxy as described here.
