Message Of The Day - Installation

DIT uses a web-based message-of-the-day facility at http://www.abdn.ac.uk/diss/news/service/motd.php to broadcast news to users of campus computing facilities. On this notice board we post

  • service news - computing and library service breaks and new facilities

  • student news - events and general news items targetted at students

  • staff news - general news items targetted at staff

We recommend that you check this notice board  once a day or at least every day on which you make use of University computing facilities. The best way to ensure you do this is to put it into your computer's start-up, as described in the following notes:

Computer classroom users

You have it easy. The message of the day file is opened automatically every time you login to a classroom PC. Once logged in, you can re-visit the file by clicking on the 'message of the day' icon in the 'common applications' folder on the desktop. Or you can re-read it on the Web.

Departmental PC users

To have the MOTD displayed automatically each time you start up your PC, download the install-web-motd.EXE file and follow the installation instructions.

  • This will invoke the installation procedure which should end with a box saying:
    'Installation Complete'

  • Click on OK to close the installation procedure.

To check the installation, click on Start | Programs | Startup | motd  This should open up a browser, displaying the 'Message Of The Day'.

From now on, each time you boot up your PC, it should open the MOTD page, displaying the latest news. If you have any problems with the installation procedures, contact the Help Desk.

If you wish to check the MOTD again after your initial PC startup, this can be done by running the 'motd' from the Start menu (as described above)
