As the displays in Marischal Museum will not be accessible for school groups after June 2008, alternative arrangements are being made to maintain the museum’s service to schools. Please contact the museum for more information.

We are offering a limited number of facilitated visits to schools, covering various topics. Please contact 01224 274305 for more information.

The Virtual Museum can be explored in your classroom using an interactive whiteboard – you can see all the displays that you would have seen on a visit to the museum. You can find further information about the objects by clicking on the images or searching the LEMUR (link) database, offering opportunities for integrating ICT activities into your projects.

Marischal collections can support a wide range of topics including:

  • Ancient Egypt
  • Archaeology
  • Early Man
  • Scottish Prehistory
  • Romans
  • N.E. Rural Life
  • Victorians
  • Picts and Celts
  • Vikings

Activity sheets to support Ancient Egypt to use with the virtual museum are available as pdf files:

The cases used in the worksheets are as follows, Daily Life, Pharoahs, Gods and these four for In the Tomb; the mummies, Canopic Jars, Ka Door and the Mummified animals.

Please call (01224) 274305 or mail alison.parfitt@abdn.ac.uk for further information.

Recent research in museum education within the museum has focused on young children's learning in museums and the use of historical fiction as a support for object-based history teaching. The latter project was funded as part of the Scottish Museums Council's Museum Education Initiative. The museum welcomes other research proposals, particularly those that will help us to enhance the service.
