Moir Lockhead to be President of CILT

1st February 2010: The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport in the UK (CILT) has announced that Sir Moir Lockhead OBE, has been nominated as President Elect of the Institute. He will take over the role of President in May 2010.Sir Moir, an Honorary Professor of Transport in the Centre for Transport Research, is Chief Executive of FirstGroup plc, one of the world’s leading transport companies with annualised revenues of more than £6 billion. It employs more than 130,000 staff throughout the UK and North America and more than 2.5 billion journeys are made on its bus and train services a year.

Sir Moir Lockhead has been Chief Executive and Deputy Chairman of FirstGroup since its formation in 1995. Originally a mechanical engineer, he joined Grampian Transport in 1985 as General Manager and went on to lead the successful employee buy-out of GRT Bus Group PLC. In 1996, he was awarded the OBE for services to the bus industry and in 2008 he was awarded a Knighthood for services to transport. He is a past President of the Confederation of Passenger Transport.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport is the professional body for the logistics, passenger transport, transport planning and related industries sector and is dedicated to supporting, developing and representing all specialisms at all stages of career development.

Applications invited for new Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Intelligent Transport Systems

26th January 2010: Digital Economy is an RCUK cross-council programme, aimed at realising the transformational impact of ICT for all aspects of business, society and economy. The Rural Digital Economy Hub at the University of Aberdeen is one of three large multi-disciplinary research hubs funded through this programme, and commenced its activities in October 2009.The Hub award to Aberdeen is worth £12.4M and will fund five years of activity. The Hub will have a large team of researchers (70+) working in and across the disciplines of computer science, communication engineering, human geography, sociology, transport studies, health sciences and environmental science. To support our ambitious research programme we have begun our first phase of recruitment involving 8 research studentships and 9 postdoctoral fellowships. As part of this activity we are looking to appoint a postdoctoral research fellow to work in the area of: Intelligent Transport Systems.

The successful candidate, who will work alongside colleagues in the University’s Centre for Transport Research, will have a PhD or be about to complete a PhD in Transport Engineering or Transport Planning or a cognate discipline. A good knowledge of Intelligent Transport Systems is required and enthusiasm for digital technology and innovation relevant to society and the economy is essential, as is the ability to work in a cross-disciplinary team.

This post is funded by ESPRC and is available for a period of 3 years.

Taxi! Urban Economies and the Social and Transport Impacts of the Taxicab

11th Dec 2009:  A new book examining the impact of the taxi sector on urban economies has recently been completed. The taxi sector remains a relatively under-researched area and this book is designed to provide an analysis of the nature of this often misunderstood mode of transport. Co-authored by James Cooper (Edinburgh Napier), Ray Mundy (University of Missouri at St Louis) and John Nelson (University of Aberdeen) Taxi! Christian Wolmar joins CTR team

2nd October 2009: Christian Wolmar, a writer and broadcaster specialising in transport, has been appointed to an Honorary Research Fellowship in CTR. He has spent nearly all of his working life as a journalist, and was at The Independent from 1989 to 1997, mostly as transport correspondent. Christian has become one of the UK’s leading commentators on transport matters and has won several awards for his work. Christian’s new book on how the railways changed the world, Blood, Iron and Gold is to be published in September by Atlantic Books (see http://www.christianwolmar.co.uk/books/)

ITS World Congress

22nd September 2009: Paulus Aditjandra presented two well received papers at the ITS World Congress 2009, in Stockholm, Sweden:  

  • P Aditjandra, S Wright and JD Nelson: ‘A multi-modal international journey planning system: a case study of WISETRIP’ presented in the technical/scientific session of ‘Multimodal traveler information’
  • K Pangbourne, P Aditjandra and JD Nelson: ‘New technology and quality of life for older people: the health and transport dimensions’ presented in the technical/scientific session of ‘ITS providing solutions for travelers with special needs’
  • New Lecturer appointed to CTR

    4th September 2009: Dr Mark Beecroft has been appointed Lecturer in Transport Studies at the Centre for Transport Research at the University of Aberdeen starting on October 14th. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow in the Transportation Research Group at the University of Southampton. At Aberdeen he will be looking to develop his research and teaching interests in the fields of transport policy, transport and society, transport futurology and intelligent transport systems.

    CTR have large presence at RGS–IBG conference

    26th August 2009:  CTR members presented a number of papers at the annual conference of the Royal Geographical Society – Institute of British Geographers in Manchester.  Jillian Anable was co-author of a paper presented at the Alternative Travel Futures session and Paulus Aditjandra, Steve Wright and John Nelson presented a paper in the Transport and City Region Regeneration Session. Jillian Anable and Kate Pangbourne convened and chaired three sessions on Alternative Travel Futures for the Transport Geography Research Group and will guest edit an issue based on their sessions for the Journal of Transport Geography.
