Gillian has a background in nursing and resuscitation training. Her MSc research with the University of Salford, School of Business and Management, explored Resuscitation services: its clinical leaders and their management of risk. During her four years with the Centre for Rural Health she worked on projects describing patient access to service and staff access to development opportunity in rural areas. Other projects included evaluation of a Community Children's Nursing service and the North of Scotland Tele Education project. Research methods have included focus group work, interviews, secondary data analysis and postal survey methods. Most recently she worked with members of the CRH team to describe the measurement of ‘Clinical Peripherality', a new concept and a means of highlighting the specific development needs of remote and rural healthcare staff.
She worked with NHS Education for Scotland and Remote, Rural and Island NHS staff and provided the scoping report 'A Virtual School of Rural Healthcare'. Following a consultation period Gillian was invited to join the new NHS Scotland Remote and Rural Healthcare Educational Alliance commencing in September 2007. She was awarded the Nuffield Trust joint International Travel award 2007 to facilitate study of education systems in Australia.
Her research methods have included stakeholder focus group work, interviews, secondary data analysis and postal survey methods. Most recently she undertook development and delivery of a Tele Education: Videoconferencing workshop and a case study on the emerging development of a GP Physician 'Hybrid'.
She is currently studying Business Impact methodology and Return On Investment from Learning and Development initiatives.
