Our philosophy
At the University Counselling Service we use the Person-Centred Approach in our work as Counsellors. Carl R Rogers developed the Person-Centred Approach from his work with clients. His research and experience led him to believe that individuals can be trusted to fulfil their own potential given the right psychological climate or conditions. These ‘conditions’, created in a relationship with someone who is genuine, accepting and understanding, allow the individual to be open to their experience and to develop trust in themselves and others.
If you are interested in reading more about the philosophy of Person-Centred Therapy and the Person-Centred Approach, these texts are suggested reading -
Carl R. Rogers - "On Becoming a Person"

Aims
- to help you share a problem, or to examine a situation that is causing you to feel distressed, unhappy, anxious and/or "stuck"
- to enable you to reach a greater understanding of yourself and your situation by exploring the issues with a counsellor
- to help you work through these problems to find a better resolution
- to run groups on specific issues
- to undertake consultancy, training and support for staff
The Counselling Service also runs several short courses for students throughout the academic year on topics such as
- Stress & Relaxation
- Assertiveness
Information about courses will appear on Message Of The Day or you can Contact the Service for details of courses which are running this term.
** Due to the demand for Counselling and our limited resources, we are unable to run any of our courses at present. If our situation changes, we will advertise courses on MOTD (Message of the Day) and our website, therefore please keep checking Message of the Day (MOTD) and our website for further information.**
We also have information on local and national sources of help. N.B. The links listed do not always reflect the beliefs and values of UCS staff however they may still be of interest and help.
