Assertiveness Skills

  • Do you feel unworthy, downtrodden or walked over?
  • Do you suffer in silence and feel unable to speak up for yourself?
  • Do you find it difficult to ask for what you need?

Assertiveness is about standing up for yourself and expressing views and feelings in a direct, honest and appropriate way.  Assertive behaviour can help you get more out of university life, out of your relationships, and out of life in general.

On this course you will have the opportunity to discover:

  • the differences between passive, aggressive and assertive behaviour
  • techniques for basic assertiveness
  • how your body language can help
  • how to make clear requests
  • the importance of feelings

What will the course be like?

The assertiveness course is facilitated by counsellors from the University Counselling Service.  Their approach will be experiential and everyone is encouraged to participate and share their experiences.  No-one, however, will be put on the spot.  Each of the four 2 hourly sessions will be structured with workshop-style activities, with students working in pairs and small groups.  There will be some teaching and space for discussion in the whole group too.

Who is the course for?

The course is open to students, both undergraduates and postgraduates.  There is an expectation that participants will attend all 4 sessions of the course.

How do I book a place?

Presently, there is not a course scheduled.

Feedback from previous course participants -

"extremely useful"

"gave me great confidence"

"great fun!"

"learning to say No has had a positive effect on my life"

"overall very interesting,stimulating & useful"

"I'm more self aware of my actions..."
