Chemistry in Aberdeen has been recognised as a subject in its own right since 1793, making this one of the oldest teaching and research environments for Chemistry in the country.
Laboratories are housed in the Meston building, adjacent to the medieval centre of the University campus, and are well equipped for teaching and research in all branches of Chemistry.

Postgraduate Research Opportunities
Research is organised into two broad themes:
- Biomolecular Chemistry (covering Medicinal Chemistry, Biodiscovery, Environmental Chemistry and Speciation and Biomaterials) and
- Materials Chemistry (covering Biomaterials, Catalysis and Photocatalysis, Functional Materials, and Construction Materials and Remediation.
These two themes are not exclusive; staff work in both themes, and both are supported by activities in Computational Chemistry. An important additional feature of Chemistry research in Aberdeen is involvement with other disciplines within the University of Aberdeen and with other Departments around the world. This multi-disciplinarity means that staff in Chemistry collaborate with colleagues in, for example, Engineering, Biological Sciences, Plant and Soil Science, and Medical Sciences within the University. Collaborations outside Aberdeen include those with our partner institutions in Scotland within the ScotChem alliance, and with many of the top ranked Chemistry groups elsewhere in the UK. We have international research links with many European countries, some sponsored by EU Framework grants, and Universities in the USA and Asia.
