Geology & Petroleum Geology

Geology & Petroleum Geology is a recognised centre for excellence in petroleum geology research and training. Our activities are vibrant, constantly adapting and evolving. Laboratory facilities include CL, EPMA, FI, SEM/EDAX, GC and GC-MS equipment and a well-equipped petrophysics laboratory. Through collaboration with other disciplines in the University other equipment including ICP-MS, XRD and NMR are also available.

Postgraduate Research Opportunities

Much of our research reflects our profile of industrial contacts, but current projects span a wider range of activities. Some of these are laboratory based, perhaps using oilfield data, and the rest are field based, centred in Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, Australia and North and South America. Research is focused on many aspects of geology ranging from micropalaeontology to planetary exploration. Aberdeen has turned its geographical position at the centre of the European Oil Industry to good account by developing close research ties with the international oil industry. Today more than 80% of research funding is industry generated.

The range of industry-funded projects closely matches the current needs of the petroleum and mining industries. The present emphasis lies in hydrocarbon production-related research including both geoscience and engineering oriented topics, and ore mineralisation. Other sources of funding include Research Council, University and Carnegie scholarships and overseas bursaries. These enable a more diverse range of basic research topics to be undertaken, including palaeoenvironmental and igneous geology.

Research work is carried out across 5 research themes:

  • Climate change, tectonics and sediment flux
  • Terrestrial ecosystems
  • Deep-water frontiers
  • Geofluids and porous media
  • Meteorite impacts and astrobiology
