Research Themes

The University of Aberdeen has launched four interdisciplinary Research Themes, aiming to use its broad disciplinary base to address major global challenges. Our College colleagues are leading two of these Themes - Environment and Food Security, and Pathways to a Healthy Life.

Environment and Food Security Theme

Our vision is to build a world leading centre in research, training, outreach and knowledge exchange to address global grand challenges.
The University of Aberdeen is internationally recognised for cutting edge research that has been at the forefront in shaping understanding of environmental processes, biotic-abiotic interactions underpinning ecosystem function, and agricultural production.  It is these disciplinary strengths which will underpin the Environment and Food Security (EFS) Theme to develop and adopt sustainable solutions to crucial societal issues.

Pathways to a Healthy life

Pathways to a Healthy Life Theme

The rationale of this Theme – to improve not only life expectancy but also life expectancy free of disease – has universal resonance.
With our unique and established strengths in basic and natural sciences, translational medicine, health economics, education and psychology, we will seek to enhance our contribution to all aspects of healthy aging. Through creation of strategic collaborations between Schools and Colleges, we aspire to significantly strengthen our national and international position to address major national health challenges.
