Life Sciences & Medicine is structured into four academic schools - Biological Sciences, Medical Sciences, Medicine, and Psychology. The Schools of Medicine and Medical Sciences are based in various locations on the Foresterhill Campus, next to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. This campus is also the site of the College Office, Graduate School Office, Institute of Medical Sciences, Institute of Applied Health Sciences and the Suttie Centre for Teaching and Learning in Healthcare. A map showing the campus location can be found on the Maps page of this website.
The Schools of Biological Sciences and Psychology are located at the Old Aberdeen Campus. This is also the site of the College Teaching Facility, Natural History Centre and the Botanical Gardens. The School of Biological Sciences also maintains facilities in other locations to support research and teaching, such as Oceanlab on the Ythan estuary and the Lighthouse Field Station on the Moray Firth.
Each School's contact details are listed on their homepages.
Maps of the various University campuses can be found on the University Maps web pages.
Current employment opportunities within the College are listed on the University Jobs web pages.
Information about postgraduate opportunities within the College can be obtained from the Graduate School. The Graduate School is responsible for the training and monitoring of all postgraduate research students, as well as the provision of all taught postgraduate courses within the College.
Prospective students should contact Student Recruitment & Admissions Services (SRAS) for advice. Most undergraduate students apply via UCAS. The College also welcomes students who apply for places through Clearing. If you are not in the UCAS scheme and are applying late, you can sometimes apply direct to the University, however, please contact SRAS for further advice about this.
The College Office is the main administrative centre of the College and it is located in Polwarth Building (the Medical School Building) at Foresterhill Campus. Other support departments such as Data Management, MED IT (IT Support), Medi CAL and Medical Illustration (AV, Graphics & Photography) are also located in Polwarth Building.
Each School or Institute's contact details can be accessed from their individual websites.
The College Teaching Facility (CTF) is a state-of-the-art facility which was opened in 2006. It is located in the basement of the Zoology Building in Old Aberdeen and is operated and maintained by a staff of dedicated teaching technicians/support staff. The CTF provides large, modern and fully equipped laboratories and other teaching spaces for our students. The teaching spaces are equipped with not only excellent scientific equipment, but also a full array of audiovisual aids and a large number of networked PC's for undergraduate use. The CTF is used by all Schools within the College, usually for practical classes, and is managed by Mrs Sheila Jones.
Most undergraduates in all Schools begin their academic studies at the Old Aberdeen Campus. Students studying in the Schools of Medicine and Medical Sciences spend time between both Old Aberdeen and Foresterhill, spending more time at Foresterhill during levels 3 and 4.
All medical teaching is now centred at Foresterhill, including at the new Suttie Centre for Teaching and Learning in Healthcare.
Students in the Schools of Biological Sciences and Psychology may also spend time in other locations during their studies as part of specific degree programmes e.g. field trips.
All College locations can be accessed by public transport. For example, there are bus services linking Old Aberdeen and Foresterhill. Maps and advice on public transport links can be accessed from the Environment Office Transport web pages.
Please note that only staff with permits or official visitors are allowed to park in most of the car parks in University sites.
There is a Mosque on the Foresterhill Site located to the rear of the Maternity Hospital, near the IM&T building. Friday prayer takes place there at lunchtime and the Mosque is open for regular prayer at any time of the day. If the available time or the circumstances make it difficult to perform prayer at the Mosque facility there is always the choice of performing it in one of the chapels available in every hospital within NHS Grampian. However, the Friday prayer is only held at the Mosque facility.
The Hospital Chapel at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is on the Ground Floor of Phase II, near to the lifts. It is open 24 hours a day. A Service of worship lasting half an hour is held at 9.30am each Sunday morning, conducted by one of the hospital chaplains. All are welcome to attend.
The University Chaplaincy Centre, located on the King's Campus, offers resources and help for everyone whatever their situation and all are welcome. As part of the University's Student Support Services team, they are involved in many activities including worship services, confidential support, weddings, funerals and hospital visitations.
