Allison Pusateri is looking at Scottish community councils, which are often viewed as an exciting experiment in direct democracy and yet are little studied in practice. This project will study whether they have they been effective in finding a voice and if they have had a knock-on effect of encouraging broader participation in society.
Marek Szilvasi is focusing on EC policy towards the Roma minority - including the recognition of European Roma and Travellers' Forum as its representatives - in order to to reflect on social theories of cosmopolitanism, multi-culturalism and human rights.
Alena Thiel is working on Ghanian market women's organisations and how they impact on state policy (rather than just seeing them as responding to state policy). The project includes reflections on citizenship (the exercise of political rights), civil society (are market women's organizations civil society?) and rule of law (since they are considered part of the informal sector).
