The University of Aberdeen, Scotland, is the venue for the Millennium Conference on cephalopod science organised on behalf of the Cephalopod International Advisory Council.

Hosted at the University of Aberdeen, there will be a symposium for contributed papers, verbal and poster presentations on the theme of Cephalopod Biomass and Production and associated workshops.

 Symposium 5th-7th July 2000

Cephalopod Biomass and Production

Worldwide interest has been generated in the large biomass of cephalopods in the global oceans, its importance in marine food webs, especially at higher trophic leve, and to major international and regional fisheries. Rapid advances have ao been made in understanding key life cycle processes of cephalopod development, feeding, growth, reproduction, and mortality - the factors underpinning cephalopod productivity; and the interactions between these biotic factors and the physical environment.

This international scientific symposium will draw widely on interdisciplinary studies to generate a synthesis by which understanding of the relationships between biomass and production will be advanced.

Contributions are invited from the fields of cephalopod biology, metabolism, ecology, population biology, oceanography, fisheries and modelling.

Theme sessions: there will be a theme session on contributions to cephalopod research by scientists from the former Soviet Union. For further detai please contact Paul Rodhouse at p.rodhouse@bas.ac.uk.

Workshops 3rd - 4th July 2000

The symposium will be preceded by a series of specialist workshops run in parallel over the period 3rd - 4th July to contribute to collective scientific advances in fields of GIS and databases, molecular genetics, deepwater cirrates and cephalopod biomass estimation.

Information about conference arrangements will be available at this website address (http://www.abdn.ac.uk/ciac2000) and the conference organisers can be contacted directly by e-mail at ciac2000@abdn.ac.uk
